on the road
Your two letters, one undated and the other dated Adar 22, were received without delay. Unfortunately, however, for reasons of intense preoccupation, I was unable to answer them until
now. I enclose with this letter the booklet of Chasidic dissertation and teaching on Purim
and also the booklet on Bais Nissan. Now to respond to your letters: I was very pleased to
read that you are utilizing your artistic talent, that you are preparing an exhibition and that
the art critics wrote favorably of you in the newspapers. I am sure you will continue to progress in these endeavors and that you will fully utilize your Gd given talents to strengthen
Judaism and religious feeling. The most important part of the letter is your complaint about
your situation. You feel very broken; from time to time you fall into a mood of despair; you
find no place for yourself; you write that you would like to meet with me to discuss the matter
face to face. The meeting of two good friends always has positive value and brings spiritual
satisfaction to both parties, but to delay tackling your problem until we will be able to
meet, and for you to continue meanwhile in the same mood of despair, (Gd forbid)-this cannot
be: which of us can afford such a thing?
You do not write what has caused your current mood
and I therefore cannot go into detail to show you these causes are really the product of your
imagination and arise from your Yetzer Horah: not that the cause does not exist-it may indeed
have some foundation. But as a reason for depression and despair-it is false. It is a trick
of the Yetzer, that evil inclination whom my father-in-law, the Rebbe, used to call The Cunning One because he approaches each person with words designed to appeal to that particular
individual. Again however, since you do not write the particular causes which seem to justify
your dejection I will limit myself to a general discussion of the whole matter, taking support
from the well-known teaching of the Baal Shem Tov (which my father-in -law, the Rebbe, often
repeated), namely, that everyone can learn a lesson in Gds service from everything he sees
and hears. I will apply this lesson to shed some light on your particular case: You know, I
am sure, that the genius of the artist in sketching, drawing and painting is his ability to
detach himself from the externality of the object he is portraying. The artist must be able
to look deeply into the inner content of the object, beyond its external form, and to see the
inner aspect and essence of the object. He must then be able to express that inner essence
in his portrayal so that whoever views the painting sees revealed for him the inner aspect of
the object, an essence which he, the viewer, had never noticed in the object itself for it
had been obscured by nonessential, external aspects. An artist reveals in his art, the essence
and being of his subject; the viewer examining the result can now see the object in completely
different light and realizes that his previous impressions of the object were erroneous. The
above is an exact analogy to describe one of the cardinal principles in mans service of his
Creator. All creation is derived from the word of Gd which brings matter into being and
sustains it every instant continuously. However, the parallel Gdly force of contraction and
concealment obscures the Divine creative force; as a result, all one can see is the external
form of the physical. Service of Gd, aided by the simply belief that there is nothing aside
from Him (Gd), mandates an honest effort by each of us to bring to the surface the Gdliness inherent in everything in our lives, and to remove as much as possible the mask of physical externality obscuring the inner Gdliness. The same applies to each individual; his inner
essence is Gdliness, You are sons of Gd, your Gd. It is explained in the Book of Tanya
that just as the son is drawn from the mind of his father, so is the soul of every Jew drawn from
the Almightys wisdom and thought (which is synonymous with His Essence for He (Gd) and His
Wisdom are one). The essential being of each and every Jew-including you- is Gdliness. The
Almighty did not want the soul to eat bread of shame, (i.e. sustenance given gratuitously,
without having been earned by the recipient); He therefore made it possible for man to serve Him
in a meaningful way with toil of body and soul. Through our endeavors in Avoda we are Divinely enabled to earn all manner of goodness up to and including the highest levels of spiritual
achievement. And do not think that some individuals will not accomplish the ultimate goal of
Avoda; that is not the case. Even if one initially serves the Almighty for ulterior motives,
his involvement in Gds service will eventually lead to performance for the proper motivation and no one will ultimately be rejected by Him. Such is the pattern and the purpose
of Mans creation. Obviously, one must take great care to see that the secondary external
matters of his life should not obscure the essence of Man and the ultimate goal and purpose of
his creation. The difficulties, trials and tests of life are themselves the means by which we
are to attain our ultimate objective-that the soul achieve the lofty spiritual level it once
possessed before it descended into the body, the soul that you have given me is pure. The
purpose of life is for the soul to regain that level of original purity and even transcend
it- for one hour of Teshuva and good deeds in this world is worth more than all the lifetime
of the spiritual World to come.So you see that lifes trials, tragedies and difficulties actually bring us closer to our goal, our raison detre; they are part of the Divine system
of toil and endeavor enabling us, finite mortals, to reach the highest levels of reward and
goodness- which can only be earned by meaningful labor and effort. It follows that one
must not allow the difficulties of lifes trials (or even ones failure from time to time)
to overcome the double joy of being Gds children (My Son, my first-born son, Israel) and of
having received His promise Your people are all Tzadikim (righteous). Now along comes an
individual-yourself-who is not just an ordinary person but one who has heard of the light of
Chasidic teachings, what is more, who has actually studied Chasidism, what is more, one whom
the Almighty has refined and purified through afflictions; yet you are in a mood of despair,
you find no place for yourself, etc. Your estimation of your own worth and spiritual level
is so far below the truth that it contradicts not only faith but simple logic as well! The
Almighty has given us an irrevocably firm promise that ultimately no one will be rejected by
Him, and He does not require of the individual deeds that exceed ability, for the Almighty
does not present His creations with unreasonable demands. Gd wants only that ones deeds
should measure up to his abilities. And Gd declares to each of us, Open up for Me even as
the point of a needle, then I will open it for you as wide as the entrance to a hall. All
this is the declaration and promise of the Almighty to us. Now you come along and say that
your analysis of the situation is different; it is an analysis that leads to despair. You
wring your hands and persuade yourself that from time to time you are descending lower and
lower. One can ask the classic rhetorical question, When the teachers opinions contradict
the pupils to whose opinion do we listen? You should ask yourself this question. It seems
to you that the situation is depressingly hopeless; the Almighty says it is not so. Is there
any doubt who is right? So much for arguments: Now to get down to practical matters: You must
know and realize that you are one of our community of Chasidim, which means in turn that you
are connected, as a leaf or branch, to the Tree of Life of our saintly Chasidic leaders.
This connection has the effect expressed by the verse You who cleave to Gd your Gd are
alive, all of you, this day. Our Sages comment: Even on a day when the world is dying, you
live; and just as you are all alive today so will you be alive in the spiritual World To Come
So you see that you have a personal promise from our Sages that you are alive today and that
you will be alive in the World To Come. In light of all the above you must utilize your time
to practice Torah and Mitzvos in the spitit of Yiras Shomayim (fear of Gd). You must also
utilize the artistic talent, with the Almighty has blessed you, to further religious feeling.
You cannot delay this task until tomorrow, for tomorrow has its own tasks; today you must do
todays tasks. To accomplish these goals you must be aware that all hindrances are plans of
the Yetzer; you must bring this into your mind and intelligence, into your heart and emotions
and into practical levels of thought, speech and deed. When you apply yourself to this task,
though it might well seem to you that you can only make an inroad as tiny as the point of a
needle, the Almighty will respond by granting you success; as promised, Gd will open it up
as the entrance of a hall. I hope you will not take the delay of my response into consideration, and that you will respond very soon with heartening tidings-mainly that you have begun
to act in the spirit of the above.
With blessings, and awaiting your good tidings very soon

zien is geloven.
magenta is. Alhoewel magenta volledig buiten zijn
ervarings wereld bestaat, heeft hij helemaal geen

BH. 25 Iyar, 5719
Mr. Yitzchak Damiel,
Peace and blessing!
I have received your letter, with the enclosed question
from the young men and women. Please apologize to
them on my behalf for the delayed response. I was
especially preoccupied throughout the days and weeks
before and after Pesach. As the question itself cannot be
fully dealt with in a letter, I have to limit my response to
a number of fundamental points, but I hope that you will
be able to add your own explanation to these points in
my letter, based on the teachings of our Torah and
especially the teachings of Chassidut. Needless to say, if
there are any aspects of my letter which are not
sufficiently clear, I am always ready to respond to further
inquiries and even challenges or refutations which
I will endeavor to answer to the best of my ability.
In response to the question:
Is there a convincing proof for the existence of the
Creator that could satisfy us as skeptics beyond the
faintest shadow of a doubt? At first glance the question
seems simple enough, especially since the concepts are
straightforward and the terms familiar. But this apparent
simplicity is deceptive, and to address the question
properly requires clarity of language and careful
definition of terms. In particular, what do we mean by
existence and proof of existence? We must start here
because these words mean very different things to
different people. For example, that which constitutes
complete proof for a young child may be totally
inadequate for a meticulous scientist, and vice versa. For
instance, some say that for children, existence and proof
of existence apply only to tangible objects seeing is
believing.
Included in this kind of proof is the general idea of a
report. This too is a proof based on perception, except
that it is someone elses perception. Consider, for
example, a person born blind and who has never seen
the shade of pink called magenta. Does he have
convincing proof for the existence of that color? Surely
he will rely on the perceptions of others who tell him
that there is such a thing as light, that it comes in various
colors, and that these colors come in different shades,
one of which is magenta. Although magenta is totally
beyond anything in his experience, he has absolutely no
trouble believing in this entity because he trusts other
peoples reported perceptions.
At a more abstract level, another perfectly acceptable
kind of proof is reasoning from effect to cause. Everyone
acknowledges with complete certainty that everything
that happens has a reason and cause for happening. Thus
when one sees actions, these themselves are proof of
an activating force, even though this is not direct proof
and superficially there appears to be room for doubt. A

Chapter 2
From the foregoing [exposition] the answer to the
answer to the heretics [its deduced], and the root
off the error of those who deny individual Divine
Providence and the signs and miracles recorded
in the Torah is revealed. They err, making a false
analogy, in comparing the work of Gd, the
Creator of heaven and earth, to the work of man
and his schemes. For, when a goldsmith has made
a vessel, that vessel is no longer dependent upon
the smith, and even when his hands are removed
from it and he goes away, the vessel remains in
exactly the same image and form as when it left
the hands of the smith. In the same way, these
fools conceive the creation of heaven and earth.
But their eyes are covered [and they fail] to see the
great difference between the work of man and his
schemes-with consists of making one thing out of
another which already exists, merely changing the
form and appearance from an ingot of silver to a
vessel-and the making of heaven and earth, which
is creation ex nihilo. Rather, the Activating Force
of the Creator must continuously be in the thing
created to give it life and existence. [These Forces]
are the letters of speech of the Ten Utterances by
which [beings] were created.
Chapter 3
Now, following these words and the truth
[concerning the nature of the Creation], every
intelligent person will understand clearly that each
creature and being is actually considered naught
and absolute nothingness in relation to the
Activating Force and the Breath of His mouth
which is in the created thing, continuously
calling it into existence and bringing it from
absolute non-being into being. The reason that all
things created and activated appear to us as
existing and tangible, is that we do not
comprehend nor see with our physical eyes the
power of Gd and the Breath of His mouth which
is in the created thing. If, however, the eye were
permitted to see and to comprehend the life-force
and spirituality which is in every created thing,
flowing into it from That which proceeds out of
the mouth of Gd and His breath, then the
materiality, grossness and tangibility of the
creature would not be seen by our eyes at all, for it
is completely nullified in relation to the life-force

Siz duch altz hevel havalim, ein od milvado. I said, I wanted to feel what the unfortunate Jews
who were here felt. The man sighed and whispered, My dear boy, you will never, ever be able to
feel what a Jew in Auschwitz felt. I, who was here
and was saved by miracles, can tell you that nothing can help you feel, even minimally, what the
hell on earth that was Auschwitz was like.

Moscow is upset and Washington is upset. The radical Arabs are upset and the gently Egyptian moderates are upset. Well, dear world, consider the reaction of a normal Jew from Israel. In 1920 and 1921
and also in 1929, there were no territories of 1967 to
impede peace between Jews and Arabs. Indeed, there
was no Jewish State to upset anybody. Nevertheless,
the same oppressed and repressed Palestinians
slaughtered tens of Jews in Jerusalem, Jaffa, Safed
and Hebron. Indeed 67 Jews were slaughtered in
one day in Hebron in 1929. Dear world, why did the
Arabs the Palestinians massacre 67 Jews in one
day in 1929 ? Could it have been their anger over
Israel aggression in 1967? And why were 510 Jewish
men, women and children slaughtered in Arab riots
between 1936-39? Was it because of Arab upset over
1967? And when you world proposed a U.N. Partition Plan 1947 that would have created a Palestine
State along side a tiny Israel and the Arabs cried
no and went to war and killed 600 Jews was that
upset stomach caused by the aggression of 1967?
And by the way, dear world, why did we not hear
your cry of upset, then? The poor Palestinians who
today kill Jews with explosives and firebombs and
stones are part of the same people who, when they
had all the territories they now demand be given
them for their state attempted to drive the Jewish
state into the sea. The same twisted faces, the same
hate the same cry of itbach-al-Yahud massacre the
Jew!-that we hear and see today, were seen and heard
then. The same people, the same dreamdestroy Israel. What they failed to do
yesterday, they dream of today-but we should not
repress them.Dear world, you stood by the
Holocaust and you stood by in 1948 as seven states
launched a war that Arab League proudly compared
to the Mongol massacres. You stood by in 1967 as
Nasser, wildly cheered by wild mobs in every Arab
capital in the world, vowed to drive the Jew in the
sea. And you would stand by tomorrow if Israel were
facing extinction. And since we know of the Arab
Palestinians daily dream of that extinction, we will
do everything possible to remain alive in our own
land, well-think of how many times in the past you
bothered us. In any event, dear world, If you are
bothered by us, here is one Jew in Israel who could
not care less.

oog steeds opgericht is.

Men
(Kibbud = eer in andere
Zelfs Mendel was verrast.

in Polen.
Vandaag is gefilte
Gefilte fish

Food Customs
Many mitzvoth and customs of Rosh Hashanah are related to food. The following guide includes most of the
traditional dishes. Many groups, especially
Sephardic Jews, observe additional customs, including
special blessings and foods.
On Rosh Hashanah, we eat round challot, which we dip
into honey after the hamotzi blessing. We also dip an
apple into honey. This expresses our wish for a good,
sweet year, as does the popular custom of serving sweet
dishes such as carrot tzimmes and honey cake.
Many food customs on Rosh Hashanah reflect our
wishes for the coming year in the form of a culinary pun
such as merren [Yiddish], which means both to
increase and carrots. This is another reason for

Granaatappel

Classic Challah
One of the most universally popular challot to grace
the Shabbat and holiday table.

Challe
We
Waarom gebruiken we twee challes?
matzes vlug uitgeput.
witachtig papaverzaad.
Daarom strooien veel mensen boven op hun challe
papaverzaad voor ze het bakken.

the Gemara here assume that the name Lapidos contains a deeper
meaning? Maharsha explains that in other such cases the husband
is mentioned because he is more well-known. In this case, however,
Deborah was the famous spouse, while Lapidos was relatively
obscure. The Gemara therefore assumes that mention of his name must have deeper implications.

questions why the

to cite this other
interpretation
of
Yiscah, inasmuch
as it does nothing to
establish that Sarah
was a prophetess,
which is the subject at hand. He
answers that it was

eliminate a potential
misapprehension.
That is, since according to the first interpretation the name
Yiscah connotes
Sarahs elevated stature of prophetess,
one would assume
that the Torah would
always refer to her by
that name. That the
Torah does not do so,
however, is because
(as the Gemara explains) Yiscah has
a second connotation-that of a woman whose beauty is
so remarkable that
all men gaze upon
her. This connotation, however, implies a woman who
willingly allows herself to become the
object of everyones
attention-i.e.
an
exceedingly
immodest
person.
Sarah, however, was
the very paragon of
modesty.
Hence,
the Gemara cited
the second interpretation in order to
explain that the Torah eschewed calling
her by the name that

15. The events surrounding Chuldahs prophecy are recorded in II Kings 22, as follows: In the eighteenth year of his reign, King
Yoshiah ordered an extensive repair of the Temple complex, the previous one having occurred 224 years before, during the reign of King Jehoash. As Chilkiyahu the Kohen Gadol was inspecting the premises to
determine which repairs were needed, he discovered a hidden Torah
scroll [Abarbanel writes that it was the first, original Sefer Torah, written by Moses]. Instead of being rolled to the beginning, as the Sefer Torah, of the Temple always was, it was rolled to that portion describing
the curses that Gd would visit upon the Jews for non-compliance with
His commandments. Chilkiyahu sent the Torah scroll to the righteous
King Yoshiah, before whom the scroll was read. What particularly distressed the king was the verse that stated: The Lord will lead you and
your king, whom you will appoint over yourselves; to a nation neither
you nor your ancestors have known [Deut. 28:36]-a prediction of the
exile of both Samaria and Judah with its king. Yoshiah thereupon sent

22. Ezekiel 7:13. Yechezkel uttered this prophecy sometime during the
eleven years between the time Yechaniah was exiled and the destruction
of the Temple. He prophesied that the Jews would soon be exiled, causing
a suspension of Yovel observance, so that: The seller shall not return to

would not have been allowed to record the Megillah unless her writing was prophetically inspired [Maharatz Chayos; see Gemara above

Gd.
niets anders buiten Jou. R Jehoeda bar Menashi zei: lees
Hanna haar gebed gaat verder:

glorieus koninkrijk ten toon stelde.
kamerheren uitgevoerd was.

Welke eer of waardigheid heeft men Mordechai daarvoor betoond? vroeg de Koning. men

Ester

REBBE

Melech HaMoshiach
I go on Mivtzoim every Friday with a friend of mine. Every
time I speak Moshiach to one of the people on the route, he
harasses me. Especially when speaking about the Rebbe as
Moshiach. He claims that the Rebbe taught that we are to
bring the message of Moshiach to the world bofen
hamiskabel, in a way that they can accept it. He claims that
the way I do it, is not bofen hamiskabel and it just turns off
people from Lubavitch and Chassidus.
He even told me stories how people actually got turned off
after being told that the Rebbe is Moshiach. Is there an
answer to this? Is it true that the Rebbe limited the
spreading of the message of Moshiach and Geulah, and
what does bofen hamiskabel mean?
When the Rebbe said that we are to bring the message of
Moshiach and Geulah to the world, but bofen hamiskabel,
he didnt say Dont do it if you think its not bofen
hamiskabel; the Rebbe said Do it bofen hamiskabel. Find
a way that it will be bofen hamiskabel! It may not be easy,
but it has to get done!
Lets take a look at the source of the quote, in the Sicha of
Parshas Chayei Sarah 5752 (Os Yud Daled):
The simple meaning here is, from the Convention of
Shluchim, good resolutions must be made about how each
Shaliach will prepare himself, and prepare all the Jews in his
place and in his city, etc., to greet our righteous Moshiach,
by explaining the concept of Moshiach as it is explained in
the Written Torah and the Oral Torah, in a manner so that
it will be received [bofen hamiskabel] by each
person according to his intellect and understanding,
especially including by learning about Moshiach and
Geulah, especially in a way of wisdom, understanding, and
knowledge. As this is the mission of the times, it is
understood that this pertains to every Jew with no
exceptions.
In short: 1) Everyone is obligated to spread Moshiach. 2) In
a manner that it will be received [bofen hamiskabel]. 3) This
pertains to every Jew without exception.
The Rebbe didnt say Davar Hamiskabel - a subject that
will be received; but rather, Bofen Hamiskabel - In a
manner so that it will be received. In other words, bofen
hamiskabel is not an exemption [making it easier for us],
rather an obligation. Its our obligation to spread
Moshiach to every single Jew, and in a way that reaches
each person on his own level. In simple words: When one
speaks to children, he tells them about candies growing
on trees; when speaking to an older crowd, he focuses on
eradication of hunger and war; to a more intellectual and
spiritual crowd, one should explain the spiritual ideas of
Moshiach, etc. Simply quoting the words bofen
hamiskabel without the context of the whole Sicha is like
quoting just one part of the Posuk Vsartem vaavadtem
Elokim acheirim (and you shall turn and serve other gods,
and worship them) and saying that the Torah told us to do
Avoda Zarah, RL... In fact, the idea of bofen hamiskabel
is not just about Moshiach, but rather with every Mivtza of
the Rebbe, even a simple Mivtza Tefillin has to be done in a

Psalm 121.
Lied Hammaaloth.
Israels. De Eeuwige is uw Behoeder, de
Eeuwige is uw beschuttende schaduw,
nacht. De Eeuwige zal u behoeden voor
alle kwaad, zal uwe ziel bewaren; de
Eeuwige zal beschermen uw uitgang en
uw terugkeer, van nu tot in eeuwigheid.
Psalm 121
A Song of Ascents. I lift my eyes to the
mountains-from where will my help
come? My help will come from the
Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. He
will not let your foot falter; your
guardian does not slumber. Indeed, the
Guardian of Israel neither slumbers nor
sleeps. The Lord is your guardian; the
Lord is your protective shade at your
right hand. The sun will not harm you
by day, nor the moon by night. The
Lord will guard you from all evil; He will
guard your soul. The Lord will guard
your going and your coming from now
and for all time.

The Menorah
The menorah is very frequently employed as a Jewish
symbol. Nevertheless, the authenticity of the design
with which the menorah is usually depicted is a
matter of question. For there are several
inconsistencies between the designs generally
employed and the description of this article in the
traditional sources. The branches of the Menorah are
one such example. Generally, these branches are
depicted as semi-circular or oblong in shape.
Nevertheless, Rashi in his commentary to the Torah,
explicitly writes that the branches extended upward
in a diagonal. Indeed, the very Hebrew word which
the Torah uses to describe the branches, implies a
straight line.
What is the Rambams view?
Part of the confusion concerning the shape of the
branches of the menorah stems from the fact that the
Rambam makes no definite statement regarding this
issue, neither in his Commentary on the Mishnah,
nor in his Mishneh Torah. For that reason, several
commentaries were led to the conclusion that he also
agrees that the branches were semi-circular.
Nothing, however, could be further from the truth.
The Rambam does not describe the shape of the
branches of the menorah, because it is unnecessary.
In both his Commentary on the Mishnah and his
Mishneh Torah, he adds drawings in which he depicts
the menorah. And in both instances, he shows the
branches as extending diagonally, in straight lines.
Unfortunately, at the time the Rambam wrote these
works, printing presses had not been invented. It was
not until several centuries after his passing that his
texts were printed, and in these printings, his original
drawings were omitted.
Equally clear evidence of the Rambams perspective
can be gleaned from the commentary to the Torah
written by his son, Rabbeinu Avraham. When
describing the manner in which the menorah was
fashioned, Rabbeinu Avraham states: The six
branches... extended upward from the center shaft
of the menorah in a straight line, as depicted by my
father, and not in a semi-circle as depicted by others.
The Position of the Goblets
Another of the points of difference between the
Rambams conception of the menorah as reflected in
the above-mentioned diagrams, and the commonly
accepted design of the menorah, is the position of the
goblets. To explain: There were 22 goblets in the
menorah. The Rambam describes them as
Alexandrian chalices with wide mouths and narrow
bases. In his drawings of the menorah, he depicts
them as having them as having been positioned upside down, while the general conception is that they
are standing upright.

Antwoord:
meisjes Shabbes licht aanstaken. We vinden ook
dat verschillende Rabbijnse families deze
traditie in eer houden.
komen.
Daarom werd de traditie vergeten om jonge
meisjes ook Shabbes licht te laten aansteken.
Vandaag is dat geen probleem meer. De Rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson MHM,
